A gunman opened fire on Annunciation Catholic School in south Minneapolis during an all-school Mass on Wednesday morning, killing two children and wounding 17 other people before taking his own life, city officials said. The attack began about 8:30 a.m. when the assailant fired dozens of rounds through stained-glass windows at pupils seated in the pews. Fourteen of the wounded are children, and two victims remain in critical condition at area trauma centers. Police Chief Brian O’Hara called the assault a “deliberate act of violence against innocent children.” Investigators found that at least two church doors had been braced with wooden planks, and a smoke device was recovered, although no explosives were discovered. Officers entered the church within minutes, rendered first aid and evacuated classes from the kindergarten-to-eighth-grade campus. The shooter was identified as Robin Westman, a Minneapolis resident in his early twenties who legally changed his name from Robert in 2020. Westman was armed with a rifle, a shotgun and a pistol and used all three weapons, according to police. Law-enforcement officials said the gunman died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound outside the building, ending the threat. Federal agents from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are assisting Minneapolis police in examining the shooter’s online postings and possible motive, including whether the rampage constitutes a hate crime or domestic-terrorism incident targeting Catholics. Authorities said Westman’s mother previously worked at the school but have not established a definitive link between that employment and the attack. President Donald Trump ordered U.S. flags flown at half-staff through Sunday in honor of the victims. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and local religious leaders pledged support for the school community, while city officials set up counseling services for students and staff.

Janine and I are heartbroken and angered by today’s mass shooting in Minneapolis. Schools should be safe places where kids can learn and grow. Parents should never have to worry about whether their child will come home at the end of the day. Our hearts are with the victims, https://t.co/xsFMVc8owr
