Magellan Diagnostics, a medical device company based in Billerica, Massachusetts, has agreed to pay $42 million to resolve criminal charges related to its lead-testing devices. The company concealed a malfunction in its devices that produced inaccurately low lead test results for potentially tens of thousands of children and other patients. As part of the resolution, Magellan Diagnostics will plead guilty to two misdemeanors and enter into a deferred prosecution agreement to resolve felony fraud conspiracy charges. The resolution of these US charges was announced by the US Attorney’s office.
