Miami Commissioner Alex Diaz de la Portilla was arrested for money laundering and bribery after the Miami-Dade ethics board launched an investigation. Subsequently, Florida lawmakers passed a law prohibiting ethics boards from initiating investigations. In a related development, the Florida Democratic Party's Central Committee voted to remove Robert Dempster as chair of the Miami-Dade party, following state party chair Nikki Fried's earlier suspension of him. Despite Fried's efforts, the party rejected her move and reinstated the Palm Beach County party chair, effectively making her 2-for-3 in her attempts to suspend county party chairs.
