Major League Baseball (MLB) is embroiled in a significant gambling scandal involving multiple players and legal sportsbooks. Tucupita Marcano, a rostered MLB player, placed 387 baseball bets, including 25 on his own team, between October 2022 and November 2023. MLB was not notified until March 2024. This scandal has drawn comparisons to the infamous Pete Rose case. Additionally, the NBA is facing its own betting controversy involving now-banned player Jontay Porter. Two new defendants, Timothy McCormack and Mahmud Mollah, have been named in a criminal complaint related to the Porter case. Mollah is accused of placing an $80,000 parlay bet on Porter's performance metrics, winning $1.12 million. An alleged poker cheat linked to the Jontay Porter scandal was arrested at JFK on June 6. The relationship between professional sports and betting is increasingly complex, with leagues like MLB using betting partners to investigate players.
