A New Hampshire mother fatally shot her husband and two of their children before killing herself at the family’s home in Madbury, the state Attorney General’s Office said. Emily Long, 34, was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound alongside her husband, Ryan Long, 48, and their children Parker, 8, and Ryan Jr., 6. A three-year-old sibling was discovered unharmed. Autopsies determined the father died of multiple gunshot wounds, the children of single shots to the head, and the mother of a single self-inflicted shot. A handgun believed to belong to the household was recovered at the scene. Investigators have not identified a definitive motive and urged the public to avoid attributing the tragedy to a single factor. Days before the shootings, Emily Long had posted on social media about depression and financial strain as her husband underwent treatment for what she described as terminal brain cancer. Authorities said medical records have yet to be reviewed. The surviving child’s custody arrangements remain under consideration. Researchers noted that murder-suicides involving women who kill multiple family members are extremely uncommon. A Columbia University analysis covering 30 states from 2016-22 found murder-suicides occur at a rate of 0.45 per 100,000 people, with men responsible in more than 90 percent of cases. Local residents held a candlelight vigil for the Long family, while mental-health experts called for broader access to caregiver support and firearms safety counseling.
