New York City prosecutors have arrested several individuals involved in a scheme where a Queens-based driving school, T&E Driving School, bribed examiners from the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to fast-track driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants. The scheme, uncovered during an investigation named "Operation Road Test," involved DMV examiners accepting cash payments to issue licenses without requiring applicants to take proper driving tests. Many of the illegal immigrants who received licenses through this fraud reportedly had no driving experience or English proficiency. Prosecutors say the scheme resulted in the issuance of hundreds or possibly thousands of driver’s licenses under these fraudulent conditions. The investigation highlights ongoing concerns about corruption within the DMV and the facilitation of illegal licensing practices in New York City. The arrests come amid calls for further accountability, including scrutiny of New York Attorney General Letitia James.
