The United Nations will convene an informal five-party meeting on the Cyprus dispute at its New York headquarters on 16–17 July. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres decided to bring together the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities, along with representatives of guarantor powers Greece, Turkey and the United Kingdom, to review progress made since similar talks in Geneva on 17–18 March. UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said the gathering follows a “constructive atmosphere” at the earlier session and is intended to keep dialogue moving toward the resumption of formal peace negotiations that stalled in 2017. Ahead of the New York meeting, the European Union’s newly appointed special envoy for Cyprus, former commissioner Johannes Hahn, met President Nikos Christodoulides in Nicosia and pledged to “do everything” to facilitate a lasting settlement. Hahn said he is reaching out to all stakeholders to build confidence and underlined that Brussels aims to support, not supplant, the UN-led process. UN personal envoy Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar will hold consultations in Brussels and London next week, while Cyprus’s National Council convened on 3 July to brief political party leaders on preparations. The flurry of diplomacy seeks to restart substantive negotiations on reunifying the island, which has remained divided since Turkey’s 1974 invasion and the stationing of more than 35,000 Turkish troops in the north.
