European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the European Union remains firmly committed to the reunification of Cyprus and backs United Nations efforts to restart negotiations, according to remarks published on 17 July. Von der Leyen underscored the bloc’s support for the UN Secretary-General and his personal envoy in seeking to bring the parties back to the table under Security Council resolutions. Earlier the same day, Republic of Cyprus Deputy Government Spokesman Yannis Antoniou told Euronews that Nicosia’s goal is a “comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem,” aligning with the EU position. Formal peace talks have been dormant since 2017, and both Brussels and the Cypriot government say reviving them is essential for lasting stability on the island.
