The Social Security Administration’s chief data officer, Charles Borges, has filed a whistle-blower complaint alleging that members of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) uploaded a full copy of the NUMIDENT database—containing the personal information of every Social Security card holder—to an unsecured cloud environment in June. The data set, which includes names, addresses, birth dates and Social Security numbers for more than 300 million people, was reportedly accessible only to two DOGE employees and lacked independent security monitoring or audit logs. Borges warned that the project had been classified internally as “high risk” and could have a “catastrophic impact” if bad actors gained access, potentially forcing the government to re-issue Social Security numbers and disrupting benefits distribution. His disclosure, submitted on 26 August to the Office of Special Counsel and congressional committees, follows months of friction over DOGE’s expansive access to federal systems since the unit was created by President Donald Trump and initially led by Elon Musk. The Social Security Administration said it takes whistle-blower complaints seriously and maintains that the data in question resides in a long-standing environment that is isolated from the internet and overseen by the agency’s information-security team. The agency said it is unaware of any compromise. The filing has sparked fresh scrutiny on Capitol Hill. Senate Finance Committee Chair Ron Wyden called DOGE’s handling of sensitive data “reckless,” while several House Democrats renewed demands for a formal investigation into the group’s activities. The Office of Special Counsel has 45 days to decide how to proceed with the allegations.
