Japanese Agriculture Minister Shinjiro Koizumi attended the 4th trilateral agricultural ministers' meeting of Japan, China, and South Korea held in Incheon, South Korea, the first such meeting in seven years since 2018. During the meeting, the ministers discussed cooperation on sustainable agricultural production, food security, climate change measures, and rural revitalization. Koizumi visited a rice farm in Paju, near Seoul, to inspect local rice farming conditions and pest control measures. He also held separate talks with South Korean and Chinese counterparts. A key focus was Koizumi's request to South Korea to lift import restrictions on seafood from eight Japanese prefectures, including those affected by the Fukushima nuclear accident. Koizumi emphasized that trust between the countries has sufficiently recovered to warrant lifting these bans. Additionally, the three countries agreed to oppose the European Union's proposed stricter international trade regulations on eel, which could impact the supply of eel fry and processed products in Japan. The trilateral dialogue aims to deepen collaboration on resource management and food security in the region. Meanwhile, a planned bilateral meeting between Japanese and Chinese agriculture ministers was postponed, reportedly due to diplomatic sensitivities related to Taiwan. Koizumi also met with U.S. Department of Agriculture officials on the sidelines of the APEC ministerial meetings to discuss food stability and cooperation.
