Janet Yamanaka Mello, a former US Army civilian employee, has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for stealing nearly $109 million from a military youth development program. Mello, who worked at Fort Sam Houston, used the stolen funds to purchase 31 properties, 82 cars, and 1,500 pieces of jewelry. Dubbed the 'Gucci Goddess,' Mello's extravagant spending also included lavish casino trips and high-end shopping sprees. Prosecutors revealed that the money, intended to support military children and their families, was instead used to fund Mello's luxurious lifestyle. She faced 10 charges and spent $923,000 on jewelry in a single day in 2022.
