The House Judiciary Committee, led by Chairman Jim Jordan, is demanding explanations from over 130 companies regarding their involvement with the Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM) system. GARM, a project initiated by the World Economic Forum, has been accused of forming a 'collusive' ad cartel that censors and blacklists certain media outlets and individuals. The committee's investigation focuses on potential violations of free speech and anti-competitive practices. Former State Department official Mike Benz has highlighted the role of the US Defense Department in funding ad agencies that allegedly censor independent news sites. The World Federation of Advertisers, however, denies these claims, stating that GARM does not engage in or advocate for boycotts.
There’s simply no way State Department surrogates doing this “advertiser outreach” to organize advertiser boycotts with the explicit goal of “cutting financial support” to disfavored websites didn’t pass thru GARM members on the advertiser side https://t.co/GfQoObxh73
On its website, the World Federation of Advertisers says, "Suggestions that GARM practices may impinge on free speech are a deliberate misrepresentation of GARM’s work... GARM does not participate in or advocate for boycotts of any kind." https://t.co/OSvVqdEtN5 via @Variety
If I were @realDailyWire or @FDRLST, in an active legal discovery process against the State Dept for censorship, I would be immediately seeking all USAID, State Dept & NED comms w/ GARM’s advertiser agencies re: USAID’s stated goal of “cutting financial support” from advertisers https://t.co/0K5bykXC5e https://t.co/oRF0Q0svrR
