S&P 500 Tops 6,500 for First Time on Nvidia-Driven Tech Rally
U.S. stocks extended their rally on Thursday, pushing the S&P 500 above 6,500 for the first time. The benchmark index ended at 6,502.44, up 0.32%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.18% to a record 45,645.60. The Nasdaq Composite climbed 0.58% to 21,716.32, finishing just shy of its own all-time high. Gains were led by technology shares after Nvidia’s latest results confirmed resilient demand for artificial-intelligence hardware. The chipmaker, which now represents nearly 8% of the S&P 500, reported second-quarter revenue of $46.7 billion—up 56% from a year earlier—although its stock eased 0.8% as the outlook excluded potential China sales. Investors viewed the numbers as further evidence that AI spending remains a powerful tail-wind for corporate profits. Broader sentiment was bolstered by economic data showing the U.S. economy and labor market remain firm. Second-quarter GDP growth was revised up to an annualised 3.3%, and weekly jobless claims fell to 229,000. Traders now assign more than an 80% probability that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates at its September meeting, with attention turning to Friday’s personal-consumption-expenditures inflation report for additional guidance.
