San Francisco is facing a significant challenge with high office vacancies as major tech companies have drastically reduced their office space leases. Since 2019, the city's 20 largest tech employers have cut their leased office space by nearly half, leaving vacant space equivalent to more than 15 Transamerica Pyramids, five Salesforce Towers, or two-and-a-half Apple Parks. This shift is largely attributed to the rise of remote working, leading to record office vacancies. There is speculation about whether the artificial intelligence boom can reverse this trend and stop the tech exodus from San Francisco. Despite the vacancies, the Bay Area continues to attract leading tech and entrepreneurial talent. Office vacancies remain high in downtown San Jose as well.
