The US Treasury market is experiencing notable shifts as investors increasingly shun the 30-year Treasury bond in favor of shorter maturities amid concerns over America's growing debt burden. The 30-year Treasury yield has risen by 15 basis points year-to-date, reaching 5%, and briefly surpassed the 20-year yield for the first time in four years. Concurrently, the 30-year real yield has jumped to 2.8%, its highest level since the 2008 global financial crisis. This rise in long-term real rates poses challenges for growth stocks, particularly long-duration technology and speculative growth sectors, due to the higher real rates lowering the present value of future earnings. Major investment firms such as DoubleLine Capital, Pimco, and TCW have shifted their portfolios toward shorter maturities to reduce interest-rate risk while maintaining decent yields. Additionally, the historic correlation between the US dollar and Treasury yields has broken down; over the past two months, the US dollar index has declined by approximately 5.2%, nearing its lowest level in three years, even as 10-year Treasury yields have increased by nearly 30 basis points. This divergence marks a departure from a long-standing relationship where the dollar and yields typically moved in tandem. Treasury yields have remained within narrow ranges since mid-May, with upcoming Treasury auctions scheduled for June 10. Meanwhile, dollar-denominated bonds and American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) have shown mixed performance, with bonds rising on Wall Street while ADRs have fluctuated.
