Alphabet’s Google and California-based startup Kairos Power have chosen Oak Ridge, Tennessee, as the site of their first joint advanced nuclear power plant, the companies said Monday. The Tennessee Valley Authority has agreed to buy electricity from the 50-megawatt Hermes 2 reactor, which is scheduled to connect to the TVA grid in 2030. The power purchase agreement is the first time a U.S. utility has committed to electricity from a Generation IV reactor. Output from the molten-salt-cooled unit will help run Google data centers in Montgomery County, Tennessee, and Jackson County, Alabama, providing firm carbon-free power as artificial-intelligence workloads drive energy demand higher. Google and Kairos will shoulder the construction and first-of-a-kind technology risk, while the federally owned TVA guarantees a revenue stream through the long-term contract. The project is the initial tranche of a broader arrangement under which Google has ordered up to 500 MW of Kairos reactors that could come online by 2035.
