The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform on Monday conducted a closed-door deposition with former U.S. Attorney General William Barr as part of its renewed examination of the Justice Department’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case. Barr, who personally reviewed jail-house video after Epstein’s 2019 death, appeared voluntarily. Committee Chair James Comer said Barr told lawmakers he had never discussed any so-called “client list” with former president Donald Trump and had no knowledge of such a list. Only a handful of legislators were in Washington during the August recess, but Democratic members Jasmine Crockett of Texas and Suhas Subramanyam of Virginia joined Comer at the session, underscoring the bipartisan interest in the probe. The committee has subpoenaed several former senior officials for upcoming depositions and has requested Justice Department documents due by 19 August. Separately, Comer’s panel said it is withdrawing a subpoena for former FBI Director and special counsel Robert Mueller, who had been scheduled for questioning on 2 September, citing health issues that prevent the 80-year-old from testifying. The Mueller cancellation does not affect other subpoenas related to the investigation, including those issued to former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
