WOWWW! 🤯 ESTONIAN BANKER RAIN LÕHMUS LOST ACCESS TO A WALLET HOLDING 250,000 $ETH FROM THE 2014 PRESALE. NOW WORTH OVER $1.2 BILLION WITH $ETH NEAR $4,700. https://t.co/55xw6MKmg6
The value of a dormant cryptocurrency wallet linked to Estonian banker Rain Lõhmus has climbed to about $1.2 billion after Ether briefly touched $4,700 this week. On-chain records attribute 250,000 ETH—acquired during Ethereum’s 2014 presale—to the address, which has shown no outgoing transactions since it was created. Lõhmus disclosed in a 2023 interview with Estonia’s public radio that he had lost the private keys to the wallet and would consider credible technical assistance to recover access. Blockchain analytics firm Arkham Intelligence shows only negligible incoming “dust” transfers to the address, underscoring that the funds remain untouched. The episode highlights the continuing risks of self-custody in digital assets, where forgotten passwords or misplaced hardware can strand fortunes indefinitely. With Ether trading near its 2021 peak, the purchasing power of the lost holdings has nearly tripled since Lõhmus first went public about the mishap two years ago.
