Apple has blocked the BitTorrent client iTorrent from AltStore PAL, one of the most-used third-party iOS marketplaces in the European Union, after revoking developer Daniil “XITRIX” Vinogradov’s distribution certificate. The revocation, which took effect this week without prior notice, removes the app from AltStore PAL and strips Vinogradov of the ability to publish software on any alternative iOS stores. The takedown underscores how Apple continues to exert control over software that reaches iPhone users even outside its own App Store, despite EU rules under the Digital Markets Act that require the company to permit competing app stores. Apple has not explained the decision; AltStore PAL co-founder Shane Gill said the marketplace is in discussions with the company but has yet to receive justification. Separately, Colombia’s competition authority has opened a formal antitrust investigation into Apple, alleging the company’s App Store terms and in-app payment rules amount to exclusionary practices. The probe could lead to fines of up to 10 percent of Apple’s Colombian revenue and adds to mounting regulatory scrutiny of the iOS ecosystem in Europe, the United States and several Asian markets.
