The European Commission said it will suspend for six months two packages of retaliatory tariffs—covering goods worth about €93 billion—that were due to take effect on 7 August against the United States. The pause, its third since May, was adopted after Brussels and Washington reached a preliminary accord on 27 July that lowered the across-the-board U.S. tariff on European imports to 15% from the 30% rate announced earlier in the summer. Under the framework deal, the European Union pledged to invest $600 billion in the U.S. economy and to purchase $750 billion in American energy exports. U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday told CNBC he would slap a 35% tariff on EU products if the bloc fails to deliver the promised investments, describing the $600 billion commitment as “a gift” he can deploy at his discretion. Trump added that he plans to announce additional pharmaceutical tariffs within a week. Trade officials on both sides said talks will continue over the coming months to flesh out sector-specific exemptions and enforcement mechanisms. For now, European businesses avoid immediate levies, while Washington retains leverage should the EU fall short of its pledges.
