German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil said Berlin and its European partners are prepared to impose "decisive" countermeasures if negotiations with the United States fail to produce a fair trade agreement. In interviews published by Süddeutsche Zeitung and other European outlets, Klingbeil urged de-escalation but stressed that Europe "will no longer agree to everything" in talks with Washington. The warning follows President Donald Trump’s announcement of a 30% tariff on imports from the European Union starting 1 August. Klingbeil argued the measures would harm U.S. companies as much as European ones and vowed to protect EU jobs and industries should discussions collapse. EU ambassadors convene in Brussels today within the Coreper forum to draft the bloc’s response to the U.S. move. While Klingbeil reiterated Germany’s preference for a negotiated settlement, he said the EU is ready to act swiftly if Washington does not modify its tariff stance.
