President Donald Trump said on Tuesday the United States is "probably two days off" from sending the European Union a formal letter spelling out new tariffs, adding that "a letter means a deal." He noted that EU negotiators have been treating Washington "very nicely" in recent talks. The forthcoming notice would set the duty rate on European exports to the U.S. and follows similar letters sent this week to more than a dozen other trading partners. Trump indicated that tariffs for some countries could climb to 60%–70% if no agreement is reached. Trump reiterated that the levies will take effect on 1 August 2025 and stressed that no further extensions will be granted. The action would intensify the administration’s broader tariff campaign, which already features a 10% blanket duty on many imports and higher, country-specific rates for economies such as Japan and South Korea.
