Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has directed the U.S. Army secretary to establish the Joint Interagency Task Force 401, a comprehensive counter unmanned aerial systems (C-UAS) unit. This task force aims to address the growing threat posed by hostile drones to U.S. military personnel both domestically and internationally, wherever U.S. troops are deployed. The initiative will integrate efforts across multiple branches and agencies, including the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, Department of Homeland Security, and the Federal Aviation Administration. Its mission includes deploying mobile counter-drone systems at military bases, incorporating radar and electronic warfare capabilities into air traffic control, and accelerating research and development in counter-drone technologies. The task force responds to challenges highlighted by the use of drones in conflicts such as the war in Ukraine.
