The order also establishes a working group led by the Los Angeles Police Department and instructs the mayor’s office to file a Freedom of Information Act request seeking the dates, locations and costs of recent ICE operations and the identities of detainees. Bass simultaneously announced a relief program that will provide prepaid debit cards loaded with “a couple hundred” dollars to immigrant households that have lost income because a family member was detained. The cards are expected to be available within a week and will be funded entirely by philanthropic partners, with distribution handled by community organizations such as the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles. The moves heighten a legal and political clash between the nation’s second-largest city and the Trump administration.
