President Donald Trump said the United States will announce new tariffs on pharmaceutical imports and on semiconductors and chips “within the next week or so,” broadening the administration’s campaign to shift high-value manufacturing back to domestic soil. Trump told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” that the pharmaceutical duty will start at a low rate but climb steeply—reaching about 150% after a year and as high as 250% thereafter—in an effort to encourage drugmakers to build production lines in the United States. A separate tariff package for semiconductors will be unveiled at the same time, the president said, without disclosing specific rates. He argued that ensuring chips are produced domestically is critical to national security and technological leadership. The forthcoming measures follow an executive order signed last week that raised duties on a range of imports, and come as the White House also weighs substantial tariff increases on India and a potential 35% levy on European Union goods if trade obligations are not met.
