The United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee has revised its Athlete Safety Policy to bar transgender women from competing in women’s sports, bringing national rules into line with a February executive order signed by President Donald Trump. The new language was quietly posted on the USOPC website on 22 July and takes immediate effect. In a memo to national governing bodies, USOPC President Gene Sykes and Chief Executive Sarah Hirshland said the federally chartered organisation "has an obligation to comply with federal expectations" and instructed every federation to update its eligibility rules. The committee added that it will work with the International Olympic Committee, the International Paralympic Committee and domestic sports bodies to ensure "fair and safe" competition for women. Executive Order 14201, titled "Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports," directs federal agencies to enforce a nationwide ban on transgender girls and women in female sports, authorises the State Department to deny visas to affected athletes and prohibits their participation in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The order is expected to affect only a small number of competitors—fewer than 10 transgender athletes were registered among the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s 530,000 participants, according to NCAA testimony to the U.S. Senate.
