The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system launched a new payment option called Tap & Ride on August 20, 2025. This system allows riders to pay fares directly at fare gates using contactless credit or debit cards, as well as mobile payment platforms such as Apple Pay and Google Pay. The new method requires no registration or setup, streamlining the boarding process and potentially saving time for commuters. BART fare inspectors are equipped with devices that verify proof of payment by detecting whether riders have tapped in, similar to the existing Clipper card system. BART is currently the only transit system in the Bay Area to offer this contactless payment option, which is part of an upgrade to the Clipper card system that has experienced delays. The introduction of Tap & Ride is expected to improve convenience for riders traveling downtown, including those commuting to offices, attending events, or arriving from San Francisco International Airport (SFO).
