French Prime Minister François Bayrou will hold a press conference at Hôtel de Matignon on Monday, 25 August, at 16:00 to outline his government’s political roadmap and present the main lines of the 2026 budget. The appearance marks the start of a politically charged autumn for the minority administration. Bayrou’s draft budget targets roughly €44 billion in savings next year, according to government orientations released in July. Measures under consideration include the elimination of two public holidays and an “année blanche” that would freeze most state spending and social-benefit adjustments in 2026. Opposition parties have seized on the plan. La France Insoumise has vowed to file a motion of censure, with Finance Committee chair Éric Coquerel predicting the government will be toppled. Socialist deputy Philippe Brun says the package is “impossible to negotiate,” while National Rally lawmakers also warn of a potential no-confidence vote. Adding to the pressure, trade unions and left-wing groups have called for a nationwide day of protests and blockades on 10 September. Bayrou, who met President Emmanuel Macron late last week, is expected to launch consultations with parliamentary factions and labour leaders after Monday’s briefing in an effort to shore up support and avert another showdown in the National Assembly.
