A major fire broke out late Tuesday at the Immeuble Messager, an eight-storey office block under construction on rue du Charolais between Gare de Lyon and Bercy in Paris’s 12th arrondissement. The Paris fire brigade deployed roughly 180 firefighters and several dozen engines to contain the blaze, which continued to burn into the evening. Acetylene stored on-site raised fears of an explosion, prompting police to cordon off the area between rue de Rambouillet and rue Montgallet and urge the public to avoid the sector. Construction workers and nearby businesses, including Lidl, Leroy Merlin and the Appart’City apart-hotel, were evacuated as a precaution. Authorities said no injuries had been reported by early evening. The timber-framed, “low-carbon” building, owned by SNCF subsidiary Espaces Ferroviaires, was due for completion in October. An investigation will determine the cause of the blaze.
