France has set aside €2 billion to develop military applications of artificial intelligence by 2030, positioning the technology as a strategic priority on par with the advent of nuclear weapons. The investment forms part of a wider effort to ensure the French armed forces can deploy so-called “intelligent” weapons systems and decision-support tools as the global race to field AI-enabled capabilities accelerates. Across the Atlantic, lawmakers have placed similar emphasis on emerging technologies in the Fiscal-Year 2026 National Defense Authorization Act. House Armed Services Committee Republicans say the draft legislation channels additional resources into AI, hypersonic weapons and autonomous platforms to preserve the United States’ edge over China, Russia and other potential adversaries. Senator Deb Fischer highlighted more than $4 billion for the Air Force’s Sentinel intercontinental ballistic-missile replacement, $320 million for a nuclear-armed sea-launched cruise missile, and further sums for command-and-control upgrades at Offutt Air Force Base, headquarters of U.S. Strategic Command. The parallel moves by Paris and Washington underscore a broader shift among Western militaries toward software-driven warfare. As artificial intelligence becomes integral to targeting, logistics and nuclear command systems, analysts warn that governance and safety mechanisms will need to evolve as quickly as the technology itself.
