France is experiencing an unprecedented early spread of chikungunya virus in 2025, with 14 indigenous cases identified across seven separate outbreaks in metropolitan regions including Var, Hérault, Bouches-du-Rhône, Corsica, Gironde, and Alsace. The first indigenous case of the year was detected in La Crau, Var, followed by additional cases in Prades-le-Lez (Hérault), Salon-de-Provence (Bouches-du-Rhône), and Grosseto-Prugna (Corsica). Public health authorities have initiated mosquito control operations and heightened surveillance in affected areas. The early local transmissions are linked to the ongoing epidemic in Réunion, which has reported nearly 53,750 biologically confirmed indigenous chikungunya cases since the start of 2025, including 27 deaths. Imported cases from regions such as Madagascar and La Réunion have contributed to the spread. In addition to chikungunya, France has reported 454 imported dengue cases and one imported Zika case since May 1, 2025, with the first indigenous dengue transmission of the year confirmed in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. The rapid and widespread local transmission of chikungunya is attributed to the presence of the tiger mosquito vector and favorable climatic conditions. Health agencies continue to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing the need for preventive measures to limit further spread.
