South Carolina Confirms First 2025 Measles Case in Upstate Amid Rising US, Canada Outbreaks and WHO Chikungunya Warning

The South Carolina Department of Public Health confirmed the first case of measles in the state for 2025, with an Upstate resident diagnosed, marking the first known infection since September 2024. This confirmation comes amid ongoing measles outbreaks elsewhere in the United States, including Texas, which has reported 762 cases since late January 2025, and Kansas, where cases have risen to 90 across 12 counties with four active outbreaks. Additionally, a measles outbreak in Nova Scotia, Canada, has increased to 30 cases. Globally, the World Health Organization has issued a warning about the spread of chikungunya, a virus causing intense and prolonged joint pain, with China and Macau reporting over 3,100 cases, the worst outbreak in China in 20 years. Other health alerts include Italy, which is on alert after confirming two deaths and 32 cases linked to West Nile virus this year, and South Dakota, which reported its first West Nile virus death.
