French police freed the kidnapped father of a cryptocurrency millionaire during a Saturday-night raid on a house in Palaiseau, south of Paris, ending a 60-hour hostage ordeal that had included the amputation of one of the victim’s fingers. Investigators say the man, in his fifties, was forced into a van by masked assailants on Thursday morning in the capital’s 14th arrondissement. The abductors demanded a ransom of €5 million to €7 million from his son, emailing a video that showed the severed finger to pressure the family. No payment was ultimately made. Five suspects were arrested at the scene, and police later detained two additional people, bringing the number held for questioning to seven, the Paris prosecutor’s office said. The detainees face potential charges of kidnapping, torture and organised extortion. The victim was taken to hospital and is expected to recover. The incident is the latest in a series of violent abductions targeting France’s cryptocurrency community, including the January kidnapping of Ledger co-founder David Balland. Authorities are urging digital-asset entrepreneurs to bolster personal security as ransom schemes grow in sophistication.
