French President Emmanuel Macron has designated 12 July as a national day of commemoration for the judicial rehabilitation of Alfred Dreyfus, the Jewish army officer wrongly convicted of treason in the late 19th century. The move, announced on Saturday in a statement from the Élysée Palace, aims to honour the victory of justice over antisemitism and to underscore continued vigilance against hate. The inaugural ceremony will take place in 2026, coinciding with the 120th anniversary of the Court of Cassation ruling that cleared Dreyfus’s name on 12 July 1906. Macron said the annual observance would keep alive the example set by Dreyfus and his defenders in upholding the republican values of liberty, equality and fraternity. The announcement comes amid persistent concern about antisemitism in France. The Interior Ministry recorded 504 antisemitic acts between January and May 2025—down 24% from a year earlier but still double the level logged over the same period in 2013.
