Left-wing leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon said La France insoumise will file a new motion seeking the impeachment of President Emmanuel Macron on 23 September. Speaking on France Inter, Mélenchon argued that the head of state is “the cause” of the country’s political and economic deadlock and should be removed from office. It will be the second attempt by Mélenchon’s group to invoke Article 68 of the Constitution in as many years; a similar motion in 2024 was rejected in committee. Under the procedure, one tenth of the National Assembly must sign the resolution before Parliament can be convened as a High Court to decide on the president’s dismissal. The announcement adds to mounting pressure on the Élysée. Prime Minister François Bayrou is already fighting for survival, having called a vote of confidence for 8 September over his deficit-reduction plan. Opposition lawmakers from the Greens and the far right have also urged either a presidential resignation or fresh elections, signalling an increasingly volatile political climate as lawmakers return from the summer recess.
