The French restaurant industry is experiencing a decline in patronage, with attendance dropping by 15% to 20% since the start of the summer season, according to the Union des Métiers et des Industries de l'Hôtellerie (Umih). Alain Fontaine, president of the Association Française des Maîtres Restaurateurs (AFMR), highlighted that 25 restaurants are closing daily amid this downturn, attributing some mitigation to tourist visits. Thierry Marx, a renowned chef and president of Umih, has called for a comprehensive framework law to protect French gastronomy, particularly the tradition of "fait maison" (home-made cooking), which he describes as threatened. Marx emphasized the urgency of safeguarding this culinary heritage, warning that French gastronomy is deteriorating. The situation reflects a broader trend of French consumers turning away from traditional dining establishments.
