A series of large wildfires have affected the Hérault and Aude departments in southern France since early July 2025, leading to extensive damage and major disruptions. The most severe fire near Narbonne in the Aude department has burned over 2,000 hectares of vegetation as of July 8, forcing the closure of the A9 motorway between Sète and Lunel, and later between Sète and Agde. This fire has also caused evacuations and confinement orders for residents in nearby areas, with some homes damaged by flames. Firefighting efforts have involved hundreds of firefighters and aerial support from Canadair water bombers. Additional fires have continued to burn in the region, including a fire near Castelnau-de-Guers in Hérault consuming at least 400 hectares and multiple outbreaks in the Aude department throughout late July, with one fire burning approximately 600 hectares and mobilizing up to 650 firefighters. Despite the scale of the fires, authorities have reported that some fires remain active but stabilized, with ongoing concerns about wind conditions potentially exacerbating the situation. The fires have led to prolonged closures of key sections of the A9 motorway, impacting traffic and regional connectivity.
