Gunther retained the World Heavyweight Championship by forcing Bill Goldberg to submit in the main event of WWE’s revived Saturday Night’s Main Event, staged late Saturday at State Farm Arena in Atlanta and televised on NBC and Peacock. The 14-minute bout saw the 58-year-old Goldberg land his trademark spear and Jackhammer before succumbing to Gunther’s rear-naked choke, ending the challenge in front of the Hall of Famer’s hometown crowd. Immediately after the match, Goldberg confirmed that the contest was his last, bringing to a close a 28-year career that began with a record 173-match undefeated streak in WCW and produced five world-title reigns across WCW and WWE. The former Georgia Bulldogs football standout thanked fans during a brief in-ring address joined by former MMA champion Josh Barnett. The Atlanta card also featured Solo Sikoa retaining the United States Championship against Jimmy Uso and Randy Orton defeating Drew McIntyre, highlighting WWE’s final premium live event before SummerSlam.
