German investor morale deteriorated sharply in August, with the ZEW Economic Sentiment index dropping to 34.7 from July’s 52.7 and undershooting the consensus forecast of 39.5. The forward-looking gauge, compiled by the Center for European Economic Research, ended a three-month run of improvements and marked its lowest reading since April. Assessments of current conditions also worsened. The ZEW Current Conditions index fell to −68.6, deeper than both July’s −59.5 and economists’ expectations of −67.0, signalling lingering pessimism over the German economy’s near-term performance despite an easing of supply bottlenecks. Across the wider euro area, the ZEW Expectations measure slipped to 25.1 from 36.1 in July, suggesting investors remain cautious even after Brussels and Washington announced a trade accord earlier this month. Analysts use the survey as an early barometer of economic momentum ahead of official data releases.
