LIV Golf has applied again to be included in the Official World Golf Ranking, without any indication how it will operate differently from when their first application was rejected nearly two years ago. https://t.co/2YvPQkHSb8
LIV Golf is once again applying for Official World Golf Ranking points. The league's previous OWGR application was denied for several reasons, such as its tournaments being 54 holes instead of 72 and the league having no cuts and too many guaranteed spots.
LIV Golf has reapplied for its tournaments to receive points from the Official World Golf Ranking, the OWGR confirmed on Friday. Chairman Trevor Immelman said the board has begun a “thorough evaluation” of the June 30 submission and will judge the Saudi-funded circuit against existing criteria that govern 24 other global tours. The breakaway league’s initial bid was rejected in October 2023 because its 54-hole, no-cut format and largely fixed 54-player roster were deemed incompatible with the ranking’s standards. LIV, now led by chief executive Scott O’Neil, has since introduced limited promotion and relegation mechanisms but remains under scrutiny for limited field turnover. World ranking points are critical to the circuit as majors still rely on OWGR standings to fill much of their fields; the new review could take more than a year.
