Oakmont Country Club has barred former U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark from its property after the American golfer smashed a locker in frustration when he missed the cut at last month’s national championship. The 31-year-old, who won the 2023 U.S. Open, damaged the century-old locker following a closing bogey that left him one stroke outside the weekend field. In a letter sent to members and confirmed by multiple outlets, Oakmont president John Lynch said the suspension will remain in force until Clark repays the repair costs, makes a “meaningful contribution” to a charity selected by the club’s board and completes counseling or anger-management sessions. The decision was taken after consultations with the U.S. Golf Association and the club’s directors. Clark apologised publicly the week after the incident, calling it a mistake he “deeply regretted.” The episode follows a separate outburst at May’s PGA Championship, where he hurled a driver and damaged a sponsor’s sign. His form has dipped this season: he is 28th in the Official World Golf Ranking with only one top-10 finish in 19 starts and arrives at this week’s Open Championship under scrutiny. Oakmont, situated outside Pittsburgh, has staged the U.S. Open a record nine times and is scheduled to host again in 2033. Clark retains a 10-year exemption into the major for his 2023 victory, but he will not be allowed back on the storied course until he meets the club’s conditions.
