The FBI has launched Operation Level Up, an initiative aimed at combating cryptocurrency fraud, successfully preventing victims from losing approximately $285 million and saving over 4,300 victims. The operation focuses on stopping 'confidence-enabled cryptocurrency investment fraud,' also known as 'pig butchering' scams, where scammers build trust with victims before defrauding them. The FBI reported around 3,200 such complaints monthly in 2023, with losses totaling an estimated $3.9 billion. Many of the victims are between the ages of 30 and 60, are tech savvy, and are targeted through social media, professional networking websites, investment groups, and dating websites. The agency has intervened in cases where victims were about to invest significant sums, including one instance where a victim was saved from investing an additional $1 million. Scammers use dummy accounts to show false investment returns, and the FBI advises potential victims to take time to assess situations before acting, a method they call 'Take A Beat.' The FBI works with domestic and international partners to disrupt criminal organizations and urges those affected to report fraud to the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center at IC3.gov.
