Actor Bruce Willis has been moved to a separate, single-story residence staffed around the clock after the progression of his frontotemporal dementia severely limited his ability to speak, his wife Emma Heming Willis said in an ABC News interview with Diane Sawyer that aired on 26 Aug 2025. Heming Willis described the relocation—made “some time ago”—as one of the hardest choices she has faced, but said the quieter environment is safer for the 70-year-old actor and better suited to the needs of their daughters, 13-year-old Mabel and 11-year-old Evelyn. The family visits daily for meals, and friends frequently stop by, she added. Willis remains physically mobile and in overall good health, but “his brain is failing him” and “the language is going,” Heming Willis said. The “Die Hard” star first disclosed an aphasia diagnosis in 2022, then confirmed frontotemporal dementia in February 2023, prompting his retirement from acting. Heming Willis, 49, is using the ABC special and an upcoming book, “The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope and Yourself on the Caregiving Path,” due out 9 Sept 2025, to raise awareness of a disease that experts say commonly erodes language and behaviour and has no cure. She hopes her experience will serve as a guide for the growing number of families confronting dementia-related caregiving.
