Apple will manufacture its entire iPhone 17 range in India ahead of the handsets’ planned September debut, according to people familiar with the matter. The shift covers all four models—including the two Pro versions—and marks the first time the company will ship new iPhones from India on day one for the U.S. and other key markets. The move deepens Apple’s effort to diversify its supply chain away from China amid ongoing trade tensions. India now hosts five iPhone production sites; local conglomerate Tata Group is poised to assemble up to half of the output, and government data show iPhone exports from the country reached about $7.5 billion between April and July, nearly half last fiscal year’s total. Apple’s expansion has met obstacles. Supplier Foxconn recently recalled roughly 300 Chinese engineers from a Tamil Nadu components facility after Beijing signaled tighter controls on technology transfers to India and Southeast Asia—its second such recall in recent months—highlighting the continued reliance on Chinese technical expertise. The iPhone 17 family, expected to be unveiled at an event in early September, is rumored to feature an ultra-thin “iPhone 17 Air” alongside refreshed Pro models. Pre-orders are anticipated to open in mid-September, with retail availability targeted for late in the month.
