Indian authorities have dismantled a transnational cybercrime syndicate involved in defrauding elderly Japanese citizens through digital scams. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted Operation Chakra-V, raiding 19 locations across Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, resulting in the arrest of six accused individuals. This cyber fraud network reportedly involved Indian students learning Japanese and targeted Japan's elderly population, stealing substantial amounts that were converted into cryptocurrency. The investigation was carried out in collaboration with Japan’s National Police Agency and Microsoft. The Japanese government has raised concerns about the issue with Indian officials. This development follows similar cyber fraud activities targeting the elderly in the US and Australia during 2023-24, highlighting the need for stronger transnational cooperation, uniform cyber laws, and faster information sharing to combat such crimes.
