Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, India's first astronaut to visit the International Space Station (ISS), has returned to his hometown Lucknow after successfully completing an 18-day scientific mission aboard the ISS. Launched on June 25, 2025, as part of the Axiom Mission 4, Shukla's journey marks a milestone for India's human spaceflight ambitions. His mission and the rigorous space-flight training undertaken in Russia have validated India's crew-screening and selection process for the upcoming Gaganyaan mission, which aims to send Indian astronauts into space using indigenous technology. Shukla was warmly welcomed by thousands in Lucknow, including students, admirers, and local officials such as Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak. During a felicitation ceremony at City Montessori School, Shukla expressed his gratitude and highlighted the excitement surrounding India's space exploration efforts. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has praised the progress in India's space sector, noting achievements such as the Chandrayaan 3 lunar landing on the moon's south pole in 2023, India's capability for docking and undocking in space, and the development of advanced technologies like semi-cryogenic engines and electric propulsion. Modi also emphasized the opening of the space sector to private companies and the integration of space technology into governance and agriculture. The National Space Day, celebrated on August 23, commemorates these milestones and inspires further growth in India's space program, including the goal of creating five space-sector unicorn startups within five years. The Indian Air Force and ISRO continue to play pivotal roles in advancing the country's space capabilities, with Shukla's mission serving as a source of national pride and a foundation for future human spaceflight endeavors.
