A rare oil portrait of Mahatma Gandhi sold for £152,800 ($204,648) at Bonhams’ Travel and Exploration auction in London on 16 July, tripling its pre-sale estimate of £50,000–£70,000. The buyer’s identity was not disclosed. Painted in 1931 by the Anglo-American artist Clare Leighton, the work is thought to be the only oil portrait for which the Indian independence leader sat. Leighton met Gandhi that year while he was in London for the Second Round Table Conference and was among the few artists allowed multiple sittings with him. The painting had remained in Leighton’s family since her death in 1989 and was coming to market for the first time. Bonhams did not say whether the new owner intends to make the work publicly accessible.
Clare Leighton terá sido a única artista a ter o líder indiano sentado à sua frente para a feitura de um retrato. Obra, pintada quando Gandhi estava em Londres, foi vendida acima das estimativas. https://t.co/gotWM0hovR
