Marylebone Cricket Club on 10 July unveiled a new portrait of Indian cricket great Sachin Tendulkar in the MCC Museum at Lord’s, moments before play began in the men’s third Test between England and India. The former India captain also rang the ground’s traditional five-minute bell to mark the start of the match. The larger-than-life head-and-shoulders painting was created by British artist Stuart Pearson Wright from a photograph he took at Tendulkar’s Mumbai home 18 years ago. It is the fifth portrait of an Indian cricketer in MCC’s 3,000-piece art collection and will remain in the museum until later this year, when it is due to be relocated to the Pavilion. Tendulkar, who retired in 2013 with 34,357 runs across Tests, One-Day and Twenty20 internationals, called the unveiling "a huge honour," recalling that watching India lift the 1983 World Cup at Lord’s had inspired his career. MCC officials said adding a figure of his stature advances the club’s decades-old programme of documenting the game’s leading players.
