In Spain, new regulations mandate that telecom operators must block suspicious calls, with non-compliance potentially resulting in fines up to €2 million. The Spanish government also approved measures on February 12 to help users identify commercial calls and messages, aiming to prevent phone and SMS fraud. In Ireland, the Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg) is set to block text messages from unregistered senders later this year to curb text message scams. From July 3, such messages will be labeled as 'likely scam', and from October 3, they will be blocked entirely. This initiative follows reports of over 10,000 cyber-enabled crimes in Ireland in 2024. Meanwhile, in India, the Kolkata Police's Cyber Crime unit arrested four individuals, including a mastermind, for supplying SIM cards used in cyber fraud. The arrests led to the seizure of eight mobile phones, five biometric machines, and 237 SIM cards. India is also witnessing a surge in various types of scams, prompting government action to address the issue. In the United States, the FBI has launched Operation Level Up to alert victims of romance scams, particularly those involving cryptocurrency investments. A notable case involves Yahya Maly, a Missouri man charged with raping at least five women he met on dating apps. Police are now searching nationwide for more potential victims, as Maly has lived in or visited several states over the years. Cybersecurity experts have highlighted new phishing techniques, such as the use of invisible text to hide malicious code, and scams targeting Gmail users. These scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated, with fraudsters using legitimate-looking emails and websites to deceive victims.
