England’s Harry Brook has reclaimed the No. 1 position in the ICC Men’s Test Batting Rankings, edging teammate Joe Root by 18 rating points in the update released on 9 July. Brook’s rise follows his 158 in the first innings of the second Test against India at Edgbaston. India won that match emphatically, yet Brook’s innings was enough to lift him back to the top of the rankings he briefly held earlier in the year. Root slips to second, while New Zealand’s Kane Williamson, India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal and Australia’s Steve Smith round out the top five. India captain Shubman Gill made the biggest move inside the top 10, climbing 15 places to sixth after scores of 269 and 161 in Birmingham. England wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith also reached a career-high 10th following knocks of 184 not out and 88.
